VOC Visits Tooele; Davis Park Plays Host to its Third UGF Event

Oquirrh Hills Golf Course in Tooele, Utah, hosted its first Veterans on Course event on Thursday, June 7th. This was the Utah Golf Foundation’s first time visiting Tooele, and it certainly won’t be its last as Oquirrh Hills was an excellent host.

Sixty veterans from all over Utah traveled to Tooele to learn more about the greatest game ever played and test their skills during a nine-hole scramble tournament. Chief Judge Magistrate Paul Warner spoke about his career and the opportunity it has given him to help veterans.

Warner joined the United States Attorney’s Office for the District of Utah in 1989. He held the positions of First Assistant United States Attorney, Chief of the Criminal Division, and Violent Crimes and Hate Crimes Coordinator. On July 29, 1998 he was nominated by President Bill Clinton and supported by Senator Orrin Hatch to be the United States Attorney for the District of Utah. Paul Warner was confirmed by the United States Senate and was sworn in on July 31, 1998. He was one of the only two U.S. Attorneys nationwide to be retained by President George W. Bush after Bush’s election.

Davis Park Golf Course in Kaysville, Utah, was one of the original four courses involved in the very first season of Veterans on Course, and they haven’t missed a season since. Head Professional Brad Stone, Teaching Professional Taylor Laybourne and Rose Park Assistant Professional Stacey Camacho led the lessons and taught the vets some new tips and tricks to improving short game and the full swing.

This year’s nine-hole scramble tournament was played on the back nine at Davis Park, allowing the participants to experience a completely different side of the course. And following play, retired Assistant United States Attorney in the Criminal Division of the Utah District Stew Walz spoke during the social.

During his years in the Attorney General's office, Walz received many honors and recognitions in the legal community, including instructing, lecturing, and writing about various aspects of law, including ethics, sentencing, securities, litigation and evidence. He is highly regarded in legal circles and was recently presented with an Exceptional Service Award by the National Association of Former United States Attorneys.

The next Veterans on Course event is Thursday, July 26 at Salt Lake City’s Rose Park Golf Course. Registration is now open at utahgolffoundation.org. Contact UGF Program Director Megan Huntsman at 385-347-5009 with questions or concerns.
