TAYLORSVILLE—Fore Lakes Golf Course in Taylorsville, Utah, hosted its first of two 2017 Veterans on Course events on Thursday, May 11th on the par-3 course. The second event at Fore Lakes will take place in the fall on Thursday, October 5th on the Executive Course. Forty military personnel from around the state assembled to learn more about the greatest game ever played and try their hand at their newfound skills.
The event began at 1:45 p.m. with putting, chipping and long-game lessons from PGA Professionals. The veterans visited each station for 20 minutes before the scramble tournament shotgun start at 4 p.m.
During the scramble, one of the veterans, Ken Godfrey, made his fourth hole-in-one on the par-3 No. 4. The close quarters of the par-3 course allowed many groups to witness the exciting achievement, and the crowd really did go wild. Screams and shouts were heard from all the way across the course!
Following play, the veterans gathered near the clubhouse for a BBQ hosted by Fore Lakes Superintendent T.A. Barker while they listened to U.S. Army Corps of Engineers Randy Cassidy speak during the social gathering.
Veterans on Course at Soldier Hollow will take place Saturday, August 12th. The event will open for registration on utahgolffoundation.org on Wednesday, July 12th and will be capped at 60 participants.
Veterans on Course (VOC) was started by the UGF in 2016 as a pilot program to provide instruction and playing opportunities to military personnel of active or veteran status free of charge. Each event consists of lessons from PGA Professionals, a nine-hole scramble tournament and a social gathering with a guest speaker following play. The 2017 season schedule includes nine on-course events, six in Northern Utah and three in Southern Utah. Details for each event can be found at utahgolffoundation.org.
